Movie Review: UP
So good. So very very good.
Cried within the first ten minutes.
Surprisingly there was no short at the beginning of the movie. I didn't see the 3-D version but I don't see that that would make a difference. (I have problems with depth perception sometimes so 3-D doesn't always work for me. My eyes tend to cross more often than they should.)
Anyways, the love story of Carl and Ellie is one of the most beautiful things. No, it doesn't beat Wall-E and Eve, but then again, what does? As far as human relationships go, it was great. Your heart just breaks when the scene about the baby happens. It's subtle enough that kids won't be freaked about it but adults will clearly know what's going on. (Cue the first set of tears.) And then when Ellie gets sick, well, I dug out the tissues. Only needed the one but it was needed.
Russel is adorable and extremely likable. As is Carl and all his gruffness.
Oh! Pixar geeks! Ratzenberger's role is small this time around. He's towards the beginning but he's there as always.
Then there's Kevin! Kevin's a girl, you know. When I can find one, I'm getting a Kevin icon. Because Kevin is made of win. As is Dug. Oh Dug. I love him as I have no doubt he would love me. And you. And everyone. SQUIRREL!
Talking plot point here, so don't read if you want to be completely surprised: The only real issue I had was when Carl left cutting the ropes to free Kevin to save the house. He left the knife there and Russell just stood there. He could have picked it up and kept sawing through. He may not have been successful but I thought he was too rough on Carl there. I don't blame him for getting the house out of the fire.
Kevin's babies were SO cute! Like Boo-level cute.
The end was very sweet without being overly so. Though you could kind of see where they were going with the ceremony. Still, I wouldn't have changed it at all. And the ice cream on the curb!
To sum up: Great movie. Tear-inducing in the right ways. The main characters are very lovable.
