Summary: When Rose goes missing, the Doctor assumes the worst. But the universe still has a few surprises left in store…
Author's Notes: Today’s Advent Calendar submission is also a bit of a sneak preview for tomorrow's. It takes place post-reunion, whenever that might be. I hope you like this part and I know you'll love tomorrow's.
It was an ordinary looking wood. It made ordinary sounds a wood of its kind would make. All in all it was peaceful and covered in snow.
Suddenly that peace was shattered as the sound of an ancient groaning engine pierced the air. It was soon followed by the appearance of a blue box. Its doors flew open and two figures rushed out. The tall brown one was talking animatedly to the smaller yellow one.
Realising the two newcomers would not be providing food, the little creature watching the scene turned away but was still able to hear their words.
The brown one spoke first, "Now, one last time, what’s the plan?"
The yellow one responded, "Stay here, wait for you and possibly freeze."
"And?"
"And call if something goes wrong."
"Show me your mobile."
"Here. Isn’t this a little much?"
"Rose, I’m serious." His voice was strained and worried.
Hers softened. "I know. And I appreciate it. I really do. Just come back safe to me, Doctor. We’ve been through too much to lose it all now."
"Be careful."
"You’re one to talk."
"I mean it."
"I do too."
The same sound that made the blue box appear, made it disappear, causing the little creature to look back to see the smaller blonde one left behind to rub her arms to stay warm.
Later…
The TARDIS landed exactly where it had before. The Doctor rushed out, hoping Rose hadn’t been waiting too long. "Rose? I’m back. Sorry it took so long."
He regretted leaving her behind but the situation in the Sedor Galaxy wasn’t female friendly and very dangerous. This was the closest inhabitable planet that was clear of the danger zone and he felt comfortable leaving Rose safely behind there. Since she'd come back to him they both understood that sometimes it was better to separate for short periods of time. Besides, the mini-reunions made it all worthwhile.
"Rose, please don’t have wandered off. I returned safe and sound, just like I promised." He fumbled in his pockets for the mobile she insisted he carry with him now. With a triumphant, "Ha!" he dialled her number. He soon heard a ring coming from behind a nearby tree. "Rose Tyler, are you hiding from me? That’s not very sporting of you."
He followed the sound to the source, and his hearts dropped into his stomach. There, lying in the snow was Rose’s mobile. "No, no, no, no, no, no. ROSE! CAN YOU HEAR ME? ROSE?!" He picked it up and put it in a pocket. He ran through the forest, looking everywhere he could think of for a flash of blonde. He yelled until he was hoarse. He finally collapsed to the ground, holding his head in his hands.
It was everything he feared. She’d been taken from him again. He had to find her. The universe couldn't be this cruel to him. Not again.
"Excuse me, young man." The Doctor didn’t bother to correcting him as he looked up to see an elderly man smiling down at him.
"Yes?"
"You seem to be in a bit of a bind. Might I be of some help?"
"I'm looking for someone."
"Ah, and you left them in this wood?"
"Yes! What of it?" The Doctor attempted to keep his temper.
"You'll be wanting Rook Castle then."
He stood at that. "Which way is it?"
The man pointed. "Just over that hill. But I wouldn’t go barging in there if I were you."
"Over the hill? Thank you. Oh, thank you." He took off in a sprint. He thought the old man was yelling after him but the thought of finding, possibly having to rescue, Rose overrode every thing else.
Had it been under other circumstances, he would have found Rook Castle quite lovely. As it was, he was only concerned with getting past the guards. He figured the direct approach might work best.
When the Doctor reached the gate, he flashed the psychic paper and a grin. "Pardon me chaps. You wouldn't have happened to have seen a blonde, about so high, pretty, pass this way recently?"
One of the guards read what was in front of him, then looked at the stranger in the brown coat. "Yes, Dr., um, Smith. We have."
"Excellent." At that he ran past them full pelt, completely intent on finding Rose and getting out of there. The guards not far behind him, calling for him to stop and some other things but the adrenaline and blood rush made him tune it all out.
The interior had three wings branching off the main hall. Each wing had four levels. He decided to go left and start at the top. He hoped he wouldn't have to find the dungeon but it wouldn't have been the first time.
He hid behind tapestries and in alcoves. The number of guards and others looking for him were increasing. They were all very insistent he be found before he found Rose. That wasn't going to happen.
He was on the second level of the final wing when he heard a sound that thrilled and terrified him. Rose was shrieking.
Nothing was going to stop him now. It wasn't hard to find the door. He scrambled for the sonic screwdriver and pointed it at the door. In a span that seemed like hours but was really a few seconds, he threw open the door.
There in the middle of the room, lying on the floor was Rose. She was being attacked by…fluffy animals? And why was she laughing?
"You know it was open."
"What?" The Doctor was completely dumbfounded.
"The door. It was open. You just had to turn the knob."
"What?!"
Rose stood up, bringing one of the furry creatures with her. "Poor thing's confused. Isn't he?" She wasn't talking to him but about him. "Believe it or not, you're right on time. In a matter of speaking. Though I'm sure the locals aren't thrilled you found me first." She handed him the animal and went to put on her shoes.
He looked down. He was holding something that appeared to have the head of a fox, floppy ears like a rabbit, long ivory hair and long tail. The thing looked at him, meowed, licked his nose, nestled into his arms and purred.
He looked back at Rose. She was radiant. Her hair was down and she was wearing a red dress, the kind one would expect a woman staying in a castle would wear. The dress was low-cut, the bodice was snug, the skirt flowed down almost to her ankles, the sleeves coming most the way down her arms. He took a moment to soak her in and collect his thoughts.
"So you're all right then?"
She looked up and brushed her hair out of her face. "Hm? Yes, I'm fine."
He sat heavily next to her on the plush bed and started to absent-mindedly pet the animal he was still holding. "What happened? How long have I been gone?"
"Five days. A few hours after you left me a group of the Naturists, that’s what this place is called. Nature. If you can believe that! Anyway, the Naturists told me that when the sun went down, I'd be frozen solid and asked me back here."
"I thought…I found this in the woods." He pulled out her phone and handed it to her.
"Oh! That's where it fell out. I figured they kept it with the rest of my clothes. Well, they asked how I ended up where I did. I explained you dropped me off and would return for me soon. This seemed to make them very excited. They brought me here, treated me with the upmost respect and said you'd be here in five days. I asked them how they knew. They just smiled and whispered to each other."
The animal had rolled over and the Doctor was rubbing its stomach. The three other creatures like it wound around his legs. Rose reached over and tickled his under the chin.
"Aren't they cute? They're called Jee-las. They're the official pet of Nature. They're everywhere. Love to play. That's what you busted in on."
"Back to the story, please."
"Oh, right. Well, after I finally got the maids to stop giggling when I asked what was going on, they told me. The custom here is for a man to leave his betrothed in the woods for the castle residents to find. They bring her here to wait. On the fifth day, if he decided he really does want to be with her, he comes here to collect her. They go for a walk in the garden where she then tells him if she's decided to stay with him as well. If both parties agree, a commitment ceremony is held right away. Sort of wedding, but not really. They don't call it marriage here. But it's basically the same thing.”
At that moment more than a dozen guards reached her door. "Ah, Lady Rose. I see your Dr. Smith found you. I apologise that we could not announce him for you."
Rose waved her hand. "It's quite all right. Give us a few minutes then lead us to the garden? Also, could you bring my things back?"
"As you wish." They all bowed and shut the door behind them.
"You let them down, I must say." Rose poked him in the side.
"Ow! How's that?"
"When a lady's gentleman returns, they make a huge to-do about it. They have a band and throw confetti and announce the arrival. You spoiled all that. No doubt you came blundering in. Probably ran away from them. They enjoy all this pomp and circumstance stuff."
"I thought you were in danger. They were yelling at me to stop. I figured they were trying to capture me. Your safety was more important."
She leaned over and kissed his cheek. "That was very sweet of you. I knew you'd find me. I should have insisted on finding my mobile. You never said how long you'd be gone and I just figured you knew the locals would take care of me. It was very thoughtless and stupid. It's my fault."
"Don't you dare say that." He set down the Jee-la and removed his coat. He started pacing, pulling at his ear and hair. "I should have returned when I said I would. I guess I didn't set the time for when I left. It stayed parallel."
"Did you save the day?"
"Yes. Yes I did."
"I knew you would. What d'ya say to a walk?"
He smiled at her. "Love one."
He helped her put on a cape. It was silvery-white and held together with a gold clasp. They joined hands and left the room. With a nod from Rose, a pair of guards led them through the winding halls down to the garden.
It was the type of garden one would expect to find in such a place. Several of the trees were evergreens. A handful of bushes still blossomed. All of the flowers were white. Every thing was white and green and beautiful. Rose’s red dress made her stand out like her namesake.
They just meandered for a bit, comfortable enough just being in each other's company.
"That's amazing. Even the leaves on this tree are white!" Rose raised her arm to touch them but couldn’t quite reach the branch.
The Doctor could. "Those aren't leaves." He shook the branch. As Rose went to catch the falling object, she slipped. The Doctor caught her around the waist and was content to leave his arms around her.
"It's a giant snowflake! Why isn't it melting?"
"It will. It's been, oh, what's the term? Flash frozen. Like fish or corn nibblets you'd find at the market in the frozen food part."
"Sort of takes the romance out of it when you put it like that."
He tightened his arms around her. "Some planets consider fish the height of romance, I'll have you know."
She let the flake fall to the ground and stepped away from him. "So, um, I was thinking. About the ceremony thing." She kept her head down. "Do you want, I mean, if you don't, I understand. I just thought, since I came back, we, well, I could have been wrong."
"Well, I suppose since I cheated them out their announcement thingee, it's only fair."
She turned then, angry. "Look, if you aren't going to take it seriously, just forget it. I'll get my bag and we can go." She started to storm off.
He captured her arm and gently pulled her back. "Rose Tyler, look at me." She did. "All I have to offer is a 900-some year-old eccentric Time Lord with a silly blue box that can travel all of time and space but is somewhat dodgy with her landings. I will tell you they both want nothing more than to have you with them for as long as you can stand it. If that sounds appealing, are you interested?" He wiped a tear from her cheek.
She smiled at that. "I'm going to tell her you called her a silly box and the landings are hardly her fault."
"Is that a yes?"
"Yes." He let out a whoop and spun her around.
"Of course this isn't how I planned on doing this." He set her down.
"Planning on doing this?"
Now he couldn't look at her. "Yeah, um, I've sort of thought since you came back and you said what you did back on the beach that would wouldn't be opposed to the idea of being stuck with me in a universally legal way."
The guards approached, this time with someone official looking. "Lady Rose, Dr. Smith, I'm Minister Oswin. Have you made your decision yet?"
"We have. And we want to go through with the ceremony. Right Doctor?"
"Absolutely.” He grabbed her hand and they beamed at each other.
"Wonderful. If you'll follow me." They re-entered the grand hall, where all activity stopped. The minister bellowed to the room, "Ladies and gentlemen, please join us for the commitment ceremony of Lady Rose and Dr. Smith!"
The hall burst into applause and formed an orderly mass.
The minister began. "After following the Separation, you two individuals have decided to follow the next step to the Commitment. This is not a step to be taken lightly. It should only be done after following trials and tribulations as well as the joyous times. You must be willing to risk it all for each other. So, Dr. Smith…"
"Doctor."
"Sorry."
"Just Doctor."
"So then, Doctor, in following the law of Nature, do you promise to cherish, keep safe and stay forever with Lady Rose?"
"I promise."
"Lady Rose?"
"And then some!"
"Then, by the power of the law of Nature, I declared you committed in a bond that is impossible to break."
The crowd cheered again and then even harder when the Doctor leaned in for a kiss.
A huge banquet was soon assembled and the Doctor and Rose were treated like a king and queen. They were served course after course of delicious food. When they could eat no more, the dancing began.
They let the Naturists teach them a few of the dances and they were soon moving with the best of them.
As things wore down, the bag with Rose's things and the Doctor's coat were returned to them. The whole party escorted them back to the TARDIS and wished them well.
The Doctor opened the door. "Lady Rose?"
"That's Dame Rose to you Sir Doctor!"
"Whatever you say."
"Oh, don't think I forgot you called the TARDIS a silly blue box."
The Doctor jumped away from the spray of sparks coming from the console. "Oi! That's not funny! Rose? Rose, where are you going?"
"Well, I sort of thought that since we had the ceremony, we'd maybe do the next part."
"Oh! Yes! Capital idea!"
"You do say the most romantic things sometimes."
"Rose, I may be a Time Lord but I'm still male. You suggested what you just suggested and you expect me to be coherent?"

"Good point." She grabbed him by the tie and led him to his, now to be their, bedroom.
